What is the Self Care Café?

The Self Care Café is a special Camosun program open to everyone in the college community, employees and students, to support their well-being and to deepen their understanding of caring for themselves and each other by partaking in self-care activities and discussing self-care strategies.

From art projects to guest speakers, therapy dogs to live music, and chair massages to coffee and snacks, the Self Care Café is an opportunity to connect with other students and employees across the college, make new friends, create some art, and have a relaxing and uplifting break from the challenges of our professional and personal lives.

Our Values

Accountability: The material must attend to legitimate self-care practices that uphold the good of individuals (e.g. sleep hygiene, mindfulness, healthy eating, and creative works).

Autonomy: The ability to control decision-making around topics and subject matter.

Collaboration: Topics driven by participant-identified requests. Collaboration with the group the sessions are intended for (ie: Camosun staff at Camosun).

Inclusion: All are welcome.

Integrity: We will not accept money or incentives from guest speakers in exchange for promoting business or personal gain.

Safety: An atmosphere of connection. An awareness of trauma-informed sessions and supportive resources available.

Transparency: When promoting a product or service it must be in alignment with our values and the best interests of participants.

Our Story

Self Care CafĂ© – Camosun Edition – Since Fall 2022, Diane Nadeau has been a full-time instructor in the Nursing Program at Camosun College and has brought the Self Care CafĂ© – Camosun Edition to our community, with inspiration from the thriving Island Health Self Care CafĂ© offerings. Currently hosted by Diane and supported by faculty from the English Langage Development (ELD) Department, Cristina Petersen and Sarah McCagherty, the Camosun Edition offers monthly drop-in sessions that are open to the entire Camosun community, employees AND students, so people can briefly step away from their busy days and relax, reconnect and do something creative.

Each CafĂ© features an art activity where instructions and art supplies are provided. No artistic experience is needed! Snacks, coffee, and tea are provided. The Self Care CafĂ© aspires to support employees’ and students’ well-being and to deepen our understanding of caring for ourselves and each other by partaking in self-care activities and discussing self-care strategies. Thank you to the Office of Education and Innovation for sponsoring these valuable offerings for our college community!
