Work with your MSS to provide custom, discipline-specific materials to your EAL students. Your MSS can create print or online materials to promote skill building where your students need work.

Some examples of custom materials that your MSS can develop to help break through language and culture barriers for your students include vocabulary development resources (e.g. engineering terms for Civil Engineering or dental terms for Dental Hygiene) or critical reading skills for your discipline (e.g. legal case studies for Criminal Justice or scientific journal articles for Physics), .

MSS Custom Materials Samples

Below you can find sample materials that we have developed by request of instructors. Read through to get an idea of what kind of materials we can create for you.

You are also welcome to use these materials, or any of the ideas in them, on your own to provide supports to your classes if that is more convenient for you.

Terminology Workbook (Criminal Justice 170)

Some disciplines have extensive terminology that students have to learn to succeed. A customized terminology workbook can set your students up for success. The terms in this sample workbook are from the glossary in the textbook Canadian Law: An Introduction, 7th ed. (2018) by Neil Boyd. Answer key available by request.

Note-Taking Strategy for Reading Case Law (Criminal Justice 170)

Not all reading and note-taking strategies are universal. For example, reading case law is not like reading a science textbook or a newspaper. This sample introduces a note-taking strategy to help students studying court cases to take effective, complete notes.

Note-Taking Styles with Examples (Biology 103)

This sample note-taking style guide includes examples of a variety of note-taking styles and tips for how to choose which style will work best for the learning context. The note-taking materials are based on the open-access textbook Concepts of Biology – 1st Canadian Edition by Charles Molnar and Jane Gai. Thanks to Debra Lewis in the ELD department for these materials.

Vocabulary (Terminology) Practice Activities on H5P

We also have an ongoing project for Biology 103 with Charles Molnar and are developing vocabulary activities for the course from the online open-access textbook glossary. A variety of H5P learning objects are available for viewing in the Camosun H5P sandbox; these include columns, drag the word, dialog cards, fill in the blanks, and mark the words. These items are also being embedded into the MSS D2L course as modules available for import into faculty courses. Talk to your MSS in your School if you are interested in something like this!
